Club Leadership

President  - Gerry Francis

The Rotary Club of North York was chartered in 1991 and I have been a proud member of this club since 2003.  Prior to this I was an active member of another Rotary Club, serving in many roles including Club President in 1993-94.

In 2004-05 I served as Club President and once again I am following Randall Linton in this important role.  I am pleased and honoured to be serving in this capacity.

Since 1974 I have called Toronto home and lived in a number of areas of the city before we purchased our first home in North York in 1978.

My career as a professional accountant has been primarily serving the public providing services such as accounting, auditing, financial consultant and taxation.  Professional assignments have ranged from working as a supervisor on large complex multi-national audit engagements to providing advice to entrepreneurs and individuals.  In 1982 I ‘hung out my shingle’ as a sole practitioner and a few years later formed a partnership with a friend met when we were articling students.  In 2011 we sold the practice to a larger firm and since then have enjoyed retirement.

Rotary has provided a number of opportunities to serve my club and community.  A partial listing would include acting as Club Treasurer, Secretary, Foundation Director, President and President-Elect, as well as serving on a large number of committees including Fundraising, International and also Community Service.  I have also served as an Assistant District Governor and on a District Conference Committee.

Rotary provides opportunities to learn about, and address, humanitarian issues by listening to speakers at club meetings, district conferences and international conventions.  The Rotary Foundation is one of the world’s highest regarded humanitarian foundations.  Rotary International provides numerous training courses and modules for members to enhance their skill sets.  I have benefitted from all of these resources.

My favourite hobby is reading and I usually complete 7 or 8 books per month.  My fiction tastes run to mysteries and courtroom dramas and in non-fiction, business, politics, biographies and social issues but my primary interest is military history with an emphasis on Canadian military history.  About 15 years ago I volunteered to speak to the club at the annual Remembrance Day meeting.  Every year since, I have shared a different aspect of the sacrifice and contributions of Canadians military service at this event.

I also enjoy listening to and learning about a number of different genres of music from classical to blues or root music.  I have taken continuing education courses in music, including guitar playing, literature, mathematics and world history.

As a fan of local professional sports teams, I closely follow the rise and fall of the Blue Jays and Raptors.  As a life-long suffering fan of the Leafs I struggle to remain optimistic the Cup will return to Toronto.  Next year?

My spouse and I enjoy spending as much time as possible with our 2 adult children and granddaughter, and of course, our 2 granddogs!

Please reach out to me or any other member of the small but mighty Rotary Club of North York for more information.  We would be only to pleased to answer any of your questions.
